What is a CPAP machine?
Basically, a CPAP machine is a portable, low-pressure air generator connected by tubing to a nasal or full face mask meant to be worn while at rest. Using a CPAP machine is easy as long as you understand how it works and keep it clean. The CPAP mask uses air pressure to push the tongue forward and open the throat. The increased pressure created by the CPAP/BiPAP machine make it easier for air to flow into the lungs. The CPAP mask should have a seal around the nose/nose and mouth to avoid air leakage but shouldn't fit so tightly that it is uncomfortable or causes pain. The tubing connecting your mask with the CPAP machine should be long enough to allow you to move normally and freely during the night. Mask irritation and air leakage can keep people from correctly using the CPAP machine. Male users can avoid these problems by keeping a close shave. If dryness is an issue, try using a cooled or heated humidifier to moisten the air from the CPAP machine. If the CPAP mask still causes irritation, try using a regular CPAP mask one night and nasal pillows on the next night. This may help you feel more comfortable. Acclimatization to the CPAP device can take a couple of weeks or longer. Optimal CPAP therapy is every night and you should try to keep it on the entire night.
Airway
A CPAP machine may expand upper airway structures which can prevent collapse and obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). With a CPAP machine it is important to use the lowest possible pressure that will keep the airway open during sleep. A CPAP maintains the airway and returns sleep patterns to normal by decreasing hypoxia which results from airway obstruction.
Pressure
Auto-CPAP machines automatically customize air pressure for the individual user because pressure settings on the CPAP machine must be tailored to a patient's treatment needs. A BiPAP machine is recommended for sleep apnea patients who can not tolerate a high constant pressure with a CPAP machine.
Machine
Insurance companies can authorize both rentals and purchases of the CPAP machine from your durable medical equipment (DME) vendor. A CPAP machine is available only with a prescription from a healthcare provider. Your doctor will decide what the best treatment is for your condition and may recommend using a CPAP machine.
Sleep
The CPAP is designed so that you can sleep in any position comfortably. The improvement in sleep is generally so great that many patients refuse to go another night without using a CPAP machine. People having only mild to moderate sleep apnea often have a harder time using a CPAP machine. An overnight sleep study is the best way to determine the proper CPAP level.
